Attorney Spotlight: Ashley Wells Cox

Attorney Ashley Wells Cox serves as senior counsel at Bedell Firm, specializing in family law, criminal defense, Florida Bar disciplinary defense, and administrative licensure defense cases. After graduating magna cum laude from Duke University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy Studies, Cox attended Northwestern University School of Law, where she graduated with honors in 2002. Ashley is a rising star in the legal community, serving as a Fellow in the Florida Bar Leadership Academy in 2013 and publishing “Defending the Prescription Case,” in the Winter 2014 edition of the Florida Defender magazine.

Background

While attending Northwestern University School of Law, Ashley was appointed to the Order of the Coif and worked on the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology. After graduating in 2002, she then spent two years practicing as a Skadden Fellow at Atlanta Legal Aid Society, assisting low-income individuals with a variety of legal matters.

After her fellowship ended, Ashley moved to Florida and worked as a prosecutor at the State Attorney’s Office in Jacksonville, handling both misdemeanors and felonies and gaining experience in Florida criminal defense. This diverse background allows her to handle even the toughest cases with skill and compassion for those she represents. She has been an attorney with the Bedell firm since 2006.

Ashley was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 2002 and the Florida Bar in 2005, allowing her to practice in both state’s courts. She’s also a member of the U.S. Federal District Court for the Middle and Northern Districts of Florida.

Accomplishments

Ashley is AV-rated by Martindale Hubbell and concentrates her practice on family law, criminal defense, The Florida Bar disciplinary defense, and administrative licensure defense cases. Each year, the Florida Bar Association investigates around 7,500 ethical complaints against practicing attorneys. Ashley uses her litigation skills to defend attorneys accused of misconduct, including hearings before the Florida Supreme Court.

Ashley Cox is a current member of more than half a dozen professional associations, including

She has also worked as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL), representing the best interests of children who are the subject of abuse or guardianship proceedings, and as a Justice Teaching Volunteer since 2014. Ms. Cox served as Chair of the Jacksonville Bar Association Bench & Bar Professionalism Committee from 2016 to 2017.
